The first treaty on the protection of marine life in the high seas has been adopted

On Monday 19 June 2023, 193 members of the United Nations unanimously adopted the treaty on the protection of marine life in the high seas. It is the first agreement of historic significance that regulates the protection of biodiversity and waters and sets the ground rules for conducting environmental impact assessments for commercial activities in oceans outside national borders. The treaty also establishes a new body that will be responsible for managing the conservation of ocean life and establishing marine protected areas in the high seas.
