European Green Capital Award and European Green Leaf - awards for European cities
The European Commission regularly invites European cities to apply for two prizes:
- The European Green Capital Award and
- The European Green Leaf Award.
The essence of the call is:
- sustainable development,
- green transition,
- improving the quality of the population,
- reducing the impact of the population on the local and global environment,
- successfully tackling the challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution at local and global level.
The award is in the form of a financial incentive:
- € 600,000 for the winner of the Green Capital of Europe award – the condition is that the city has more than 100,000 inhabitants,
- € 200,000 for the winner of the European Green Leaf Award - the condition is that the city has between 20,000 and 99,999 inhabitants. There can also be two winners of the Green Leaf Award, and both will receive € 200,000 each.
With more than two thirds of Europe's population living in cities, cities play a leading role in social, environmental and economic transformation, which is a priority of the European Green Deal.
The main website of the Green Capital of Europe Awards and the European Green Leaf provides information on the registration process, application conditions, application rules for 2024, the evaluation process and past winners.

- is the largest French cycling city. The city has achieved impressive cycling rates with incentives, cost recovery and hiking,
- school canteens in Grenoble obtain at least 60% of their produce locally or from organic farms (95% for kindergartens). The Grenoble Horticultural Center produces 3.5 metric tonnes of vegetables each year for the various kitchens of the Isère department,
- more than 5,500 trees have been planted since 2014 and the target is to plant 10,000 by 2030,
- the metropolitan heating network, the second largest in France after Paris, uses 80% renewable energy and energy production with the ambition to use 100% by 2030,
- more than 200,000 people already recycle their food waste or do it at home to make compost. Target: 100% of the population by the end of 2022,
