Biotechnology is a mixture of disciplines (genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, embryology and cell biology), transformed into productive processes related to chemical engineering, robotics and information technology. It is a combination of new techniques organized around living systems - e.g. plant breeding, animal husbandry, food production and production processes of pharmaceuticals and fertilizers. The field of biotechnology includes genomics, genetically modified organisms, vaccine technology and the like (Source: http://dk.fdv.uni-lj.si/dela/Stepisnik-Domen.PDF).
As biotechnology covers a wide and diverse field, the field of biotechnology is regulated at the international level by the following acts:
- Convention on Biological Diversity,
- Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety,
- Agenda 21 to "Environmentally sound management of biotechnology",
- World Trade Organization Agreement,
- Agreement on Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT Agreement),
- International Plant Protection Convention,
- Agreement on Sanitary and Phyto-Sarnitary Measures (SPS Agreement),
- Universal Declaration of Human Genome and Human Rights,
- International Declaration on Human Genetic Data,
