Conventions, agreements and other documents
Biodiversity is a diversity of all life forms regardless of the environment and diversity between species, the species themselves (genetic diversity) and the diversity of ecosystems.
The most important international document in response to the diversification of biodiversity is the Convention on Biological Diversity, which sets out three main objectives:
The Convention on Biological Diversity is complemented by the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety and the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from Their Utilization.
The European Union is a signatory to:
The Paris Agreement is also extremely important, which includes the goal of ensuring the integrity of all ecosystems and the protection of biodiversity, and emphasizes the role of the land use sector in achieving long-term goals of climate change mitigation.
The EU is also a signatory to regional conventions:
Important instruments are protocols such as the Protocol concerning specially protected areas and biological diversity in the Mediterranean and the Nagoya and Kuala Lumpur Complementary Protocol on Liability and Compensation to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, and treaties such as the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture.
