Noise is sound pollution, which we define as unwanted sound that can negatively affect the environment and the quality of people's lives - the physical, social and mental functions of man;
However, it is known that houseplants and planting greenery around the buildings where we live can reduce noise in an apartment or house by 5 to 10 dB and improve the well-being of residents.
Noise pollution is caused by road, rail and air transport, as well as industrial, construction and other outdoor activities. The effects of noise negatively affect the economic picture - the health care system, the value of real estate and the productivity of workers.
In Europe, road traffic is the most common source of noise, followed by rail and air traffic noise, and more information on noise is available on the website of the European Environment Agency and the Noise Observation and Information Service in Europe. For noise, the Lden indicator is used, which represents the average level of noise during the day, evening and night, calculated on the basis of measurements of citizen exposure in one year.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has published on its website guidelines on noise pollution for the European Region, human impact statistics and other relevant data. International Noise Awareness Day is celebrated every last Wednesday in April.
Anima is an online platform set up to address and manage the challenges of aviation noise in Europe. The tool is intended for all stakeholders - aeronautical engineers, geographers, psychologists and all other professionals, as well as communities and individuals. The platform provides a mobile application aimed at authorities and airports to facilitate policy adoption and goal setting, enables noise management toolset and indexes, provides insight into noice coordination research, scientific publications, news and more.
One of the major problems with noise is the impact of ship noise on the marine environment, including impacts on marine life and human health, which has led to the adoption of various international instruments:
Among the most sensitive areas are:
• Great Barrier Reef, Australia (1990),
• The Sabana-Camagüey Archipelago, Cuba (1997),
• Malpelo Island, Colombia (2002),
• The sea around the Florida Keys, USA (2002),
• The Wadden Sea, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands (2002),
• Paracas National Reserve, Peru (2003),
• Western European Waters (2004),
• Extension of the existing Great Barrier Reef PSSA to include the Torres Strait (Australia, Papua New Guinea) (2005),
• Canary Islands, Spain (2005),
• The Galapagos Archipelago, Ecuador (2005),
• The Baltic Sea area, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Sweden (2005),
• The Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument, USA (2007),
• The Strait of Bonifacio, France and Italy (2011),
• The Saba Bank, Northeast Caribbean (2012),
• Extension of Great Barrier Reef in Torres Strait to encompass the south-west part of the Coral Sea (2015),
• The Jomard Entrance, Papua New Guinea (2016),
• Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park, the Sulu Sea, Philippines (2017).
