Forests and other wooded land cover more than 43.5% of the EU's territory and 5% of the world's forests worldwide. Forests, which are a key element of clean air and water for all living things, are key to fighting and adapting to climate change, so a healthy future for the planet depends on their conservation, protection and security. Research has shown that we have lost 420 million hectares of forests worldwide in the last thirty years, so it is essential to limit further deforestation and forest degradation.
The EU has approached the issue by adopting new proposals that set out in European Green Deal and the New EU Forest Strategy for 2030. On the international level are important:
- the Stockholm Declaration - Declaration of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment- the first to recognize the role of forests and emphasize the need for balanced forest management (emphasis on principles 21, 23, 24),
- United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change,
- Convention on Biological Diversity,
- Rio Declaration on Environment and Development,
- Agenda 21,
- non-binding Official Declarations on the Principles for a Global Consensus on the Management, Protection and Sustainable Development of All Types of Forests (1992) and the non-legally binding instrument on all types of forests,
- World Charter for Nature,
- Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety to the Convention on Biological Diversity,
- Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES),
- Ramsar Convention on Wetlands,
- United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification in Countries Seriously Affected by Drought,
- Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change,
- Paris Agreement,
- Convention on the Protection of the Alps - the Alpine Convention,
- International Tropical Timber Agreement,
- Voluntary Partnership Agreement between the European Union and the Central African Republic on Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade in timber and derived products to the European Union - FLEGT.
