European Economic and Social Committee
is an independent EU consultative body consisting of three main groups;
The Committee currently has 329 members, appointed for a five-year term, with the divisions by Member State as follows:
The European Economic and Social Committee is preparing opinions, which are divided into:
- mandatory - are binding on the Council and the Commission when decisions are taken in the field of
- documents issued at the initiative of the European Economic and Social Committee.
The members of the Committee work in six expert groups;
however, members choose to participate in those for which they usually specialize.
Members may also participate in the following stakeholders:

- 24 members each for Germany, France and Italy;
- 21 each for Poland and Spain;
- 15 for Romania;
- 12 each for Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, the Netherlands, Portugal and Sweden;
- 9 each for Croatia, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Lithuania and Slovakia;
- 7 each for Estonia, Latvia and Slovenia;
- 6 each for Luxembourg and Cyprus, and
- 5 for Malta.
The European Economic and Social Committee is preparing opinions, which are divided into:

- agricultural policies,
- free movement of persons and services,
- transport policy,
- harmonization of indirect taxation,
- approximation of internal market legislation,
- employment policies,
- social policy, education, vocational training and youth,
- public health,
- consumer protection,
- the trans-European network,
- industrial policies,
- economic, social and territorial cohesion,
- research and technological development and space,
- environment;
- optional or voluntary - issued at the request of the Council, the Commission, Parliament and- documents issued at the initiative of the European Economic and Social Committee.
