European Ombudsman
has been elected by the European Parliament for a term of five years with the possibility of re-election. The Ombudsman, based in Strasbourg, is an independent and impartial body dealing in all official EU languages with complaints about irregularities in the EU institutions and other EU bodies, lodged by EU citizens, residents of EU Member States, EU-based organizations or on its own initiative, and proactively examines wider systemic issues in the EU institutions. The Ombudsman's work relates to discrimination, unfair treatment, abuse of power, denial of access to requested information, irregularities in procedures and delays or delays.
The Ombudsman reports to Parliament on an annual basis. The organizational structure of the institution of the European Ombudsman consists of:
The European Network of Ombudsmen, set up in 1996, brings together the European Ombudsman and national and regional ombudsmen, with the aim of protecting the rights of EU citizens, exchanging information on EU law and strengthening cooperation between ombudsmen themselves. All inquiries into the issues of the members of the network, as well as parallel investigations and initiatives and events of the network, are also available to the public free of charge.
