The Court of Justice of the EU
The Court of Justice of the EU, a multilingual institution based in Luxembourg, has jurisdiction to:
The Court of Justice of the EU consists of:
I. The Court (competent for applications from national courts for preliminary rulings, certain actions for annulment and appeals), represented by one judge from each EU Member State (27) and eleven Advocates-General;
II. The General Court (competent for actions from individuals, businesses and also EU Member States, usually in matters relating to competition law, trade, agriculture, intellectual property, etc.), represented by two judges from each EU Member State.
Each Judge and Advocate General are appointed for a term of six years, renewable. The presidents of both courts are elected for a term of three years, renewable.

- ensuring compliance with EU law in the interpretation and uniform application in all EU Member States,
- monitoring the legality of acts of the EU institutions,
- identifying infringements or to fulfill the obligations of the Member States under the Treaties,
- resolving legal disputes between Member States and EU institutions.
