Petitions
The petition is a communication tool that, on the basis of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (Articles 20, 24 and 277) and the Charter of Fundamental Rights of EU (Article 44), individuals, organized groups and other entities can draw attention to existing issues and stimulating public debate and the response of the authorities.
Who can file petition?
- EU citizen as a natural person,
- resident of an EU Member State (natural person residing in an EU Member State),
- a legal entity with a statutory seat in the EU.
If the petition is submitted by several persons, associations or several legal entities, a High Representative must be appointed.
The petition must relate to an area of EU competence and responsibility, provided that the petitioner's petition is directly concerned, whether the matter itself is in the public or private interest:
Before starting the petition, it is necessary to check in the database of submitted petitions whether the topic of the issue has already been addressed. If the answer is in the affirmative, your petition will be rejected. The online petitions portal provides access to all pending petitions and insight into their status. The Petitions Web Portal, in addition to insight into the petitions under consideration, provides two key activities: filing petitions and expressing support for open, active petitions.
The petition can be submitted as a request or complaint in one of the official languages of the EU, namely:
